Official: Barcelona confirm full-back will undergo surgery next week to deal with injury

It has been known for a while now, but FC Barcelona have officially confirmed that Marcos Alonso will be undergoing surgery to deal with the back injury he has been struggling with.

“Next week, Marcos Alonso is to undergo surgery on the problems in the lumbar region of his back that have kept him sidelined in recent weeks,” the statement from the club read.

“The club will be making an announcement immediately after to report on how the operation has gone.”

Alonso has been out for most of December due to a back issue that has been bothering him. The left-back has not been a part of the matchday squad in the last five games in all competitions due to the ailment.

While it was tried to address the problem with conservative treatment, the player and the club have eventually opted to proceed with surgery, much like first-choice goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen.

As revealed in the statement, Alonso’s surgery will take place next week, following which he is likely to be out for two months, with a return potentially slated for March.

The defender’s absence is unlikely to be felt a great deal considering that Xavi had been hardly using him this season. Indeed, the 33-year-old has played less than 300 minutes so far in 2023/24 and is expected to leave as a free agent in the summer.
