Barcelona to face difficulties in permanently offloading 28-year-old loanee in 2024

Clement Lenglet has been a hot topic in the Barcelona circles lately, especially as the defender continues to face uncertainty over his future.

Currently on loan at Aston Villa until the end of the season, Lenglet hasn’t quite proven himself in the Premier League.

Lenglet’s missed opportunities

Despite praising the player in a recent interview, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has been quite reluctant to start the centre-back in the Premier League.

But the Spaniard bucked the trend recently by handing him chances in three Premier League games in a row recently. However, the defender’s performances in these matches have been quite substandard.

In his first match, Lenglet struggled to contain Sheffield United as Aston Villa ended with a draw. The defender struggled again versus Manchester United, allowing the opposition attackers to run rings around the defence.

Lenglet received another start against Burnley. But he failed to impose himself once again and was replaced around the hour mark.

Barcelona facing a precarious situation

Lenglet’s recent performances in the Premier League should greatly dilute Emery’s confidence in the player, especially in the UEFA Conference League knockout matches in 2024.

This spells trouble for Barcelona, who would have wanted Lenglet to impress in England and rev up the player’s valuation, reports SPORT.

But with Lenglet falling to assert himself, the club may once again find it difficult to find a suitor for the Frenchman in the coming summer.

Lenglet has a contract at Barça until 2026, and if Barcelona do not find a way to offload him in the summer, they may have to spend a fortune just to terminate his contract.

AC Milan have been on the lookout for the Frenchman, but given his recent performances, it won’t be surprising to see the Rossoneri back down in the coming weeks.
