As the new year appears on the horizon, two Barcelona stars – Marcos Alonso and Sergi Roberto – will now be free to negotiate a pre-contract agreement with the clubs of their desire.
Both Alonso and Roberto are on contracts that expire at the end of the season and would become free agents at the end of the season.
As per a fresh report from SPORT, Barcelona have informed the Spanish duo that they will learn their fate about a potential contract renewal soon.
Alonso likely to depart
The report states that even though there is no final decision yet, all signs point towards Alonso leaving Barcelona as a free agent.
The 32-year-old arrived at the club in 2022, making a big financial sacrifice to join from Chelsea. Xavi relied on the Spaniard a lot during the last season, but things have changed this time out.
Increased competition in defence has meant that Alonso has not seen much action, be it at left-back or as a centre-back.
Furthermore, the veteran has been dealing with a back problem in recent weeks and could undergo surgery soon, which would mean an extended spell on the sidelines.

Despite there being murmurs of a January exit, that is not on the table, but Alonso is very much expected to move on in the summer as a free agent.
Atletico Madrid, Premier League clubs interested
In case he does become a free agent in the summer of 2024, it appears that Alonso will have no shortage of suitors for his services.
Indeed, the report states that Barcelona’s La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid are interested in signing the 32-year-old former Chelsea ace.
Meanwhile, it is also being claimed that clubs in the Premier League are also keen on the veteran, given his experience in England.
As such, there appears to be a good chance that he can sign for a top-level club in the summer if he does end up leaving Barcelona as expected.
