Barcelona defender has options to join top level teams in the summer with contract renewal unlikely

Marcos Alonso is one of the two Barcelona defenders whose contract expires at the end of the current season.

The 32-year-old joined the Blaugrana last year from Chelsea, signing a one-year contract, which was extended until 2024 in January.

The new deal for the Spaniard included an option for an additional one-year extension depending on certain objectives that he is unlikely to meet given his reduced role this term.

Alonso likely to leave for free in the summer

Heading into the January transfer window, there had been talk of Alonso potentially leaving Barcelona, but SPORT is reporting that the Spanish left-back will not be headed for the exit doors during the winter.

However, the report adds that Barcelona are unlikely to offer Alonso an extension when his current deal runs out, meaning he will likely move on in the summer as a free agent.

It is further stated that the former Chelsea ace has options to join top-level teams in the summer once he becomes available for free.

Surgery on the horizon

Alonso’s role has reduced significantly this season. The 32-year-old was utilised quite regularly by Xavi last season, even if it was in a makeshift left-sided centre-back role, but things have changed this time out.

Alonso has played just seven times across all competitions for the Catalans this term before he was sidelined due to a back injury.

Having been out for more than two weeks, the Spaniard could now be set to undergo surgery as conservative treatment has not yielded the desired result.

In that case, SPORT mentions that Alonso would be out for a month or so, effectively ruling out a January exit. But, as things stand, a parting of ways in the summer appears certain.
