Barcelona, Real Madrid could receive €1 billion from European Super League

Barcelona and Real Madrid may have historically held a long-standing rivalry that dates back decades, but very soon their interests may align.

On April 18, 2021, the proposal to create a European Super League was unveiled, with twelve of the top clubs in Europe confirming that they intended to start their own midweek league to challenge UEFA’s Champions League.

However, the majority of the initial Super League group of heavyweights withdrew in response to a significant outcry after the league launched.

Now, the remaining defenders of the competition Barcelona and Real Madrid, await the European Court of Justice’s decision in the dispute against UEFA, which will deliver a legally enforceable decision regarding the league’s legitimacy.

Barcelona poised for significant monetary gain

Indeed, according to Fernando Polo, Barcelona, and Real Madrid will receive a whopping €1 billion if the ruling on the Super League goes in their favor on 21st December, as they are the only two founding clubs left.

If this happens, Barça’s entire financial crisis will get wiped out immediately, allowing the Catalan giants to regain their footing on the financial front at once.

While the project fizzled out fast due to poor strategies in place to present it, the Super League president Florentino Perez has devised an updated plan and has thus remained committed to the project till now, alongside Barcelona.

Reports have argued that the new format will be put in place after a potential approval of the competition and the decision that UEFA has a monopoly in place. An “Open competition with 60 clubs” would be the new format.

Time will disclose what the outcome entails, but Barcelona are looking at a potential major relief in their finances, which could be availed to not only solve their debt; but improve their squad.
