Barcelona boast of one of the best midfield threes in the world in the form of Ilkay Gundogan, Frenkie de Jong, and Pedri. The three are experts in controlling any situation of the game, and brilliant creators in the final third as well.
However, Barcelona are still looking to bolster their midfield with star players, some probably beyond their scope right now due to financial limitations.
These names include pivot reinforcements like Martin Zubimendi and Joshua Kimmich, both of whom cost upwards of €60 million at the minimum.
And while splashing the cash on a no. 6 is of utmost importance for Barcelona, they are also keeping tabs on Bayer Leverkusen’s Florian Wirtz.
The talented midfielder is expected to leave in the summer of 2025 after experiencing Champions League football with Leverkusen. He was sidelined due to an ACL injury last season when Die Werkself were in the UCL.
Barcelona, Liverpool first of many to place inquiry
It has been reported by Kerry Hau (h/t iMiaSanMia) that Barcelona and Liverpool have already placed an inquiry about a potential move for Wirtz with his representatives, and are joined by Bayern Munich as competition, who are also keeping a keen interest.
And while Bayern would have liked to seal a deal for the German wonderkid in 2024, they have other priorities for next summer. They want to sign central and defensive midfielders first, a list that could include Barcelona target Zubimendi.
They are also preparing a contract extension for Thomas Muller, which means that attacking midfield position will remain largely sorted for them.
Wirtz’s worth
Florian Wirtz is undoubtedly one of the most talented players on the planet right now. He did not miss a beat after returning from an ACL injury this season, and has four goals and five assists in the league as Leverkusen sit top of the Bundesliga.
As Leverkusen continue to get better under Xabi Alonso, the 20-year-old’s asking price continues to rise.
