Speaking on Newcastle United’s Amazon docuseries, these were Amanda Staveley’s comments on Anthony Gordon almost 12 months ago.

At the time, Toon chiefs were negotiating a deal with Everton to bring the England U21 talent to  St James’ Park, with Amazon capturing our determination to sign one of Eddie Howe’s top targets heading into 2023.

Initially, links with the winger were met with a mixed reaction, seeing fans question his attitude, temperament, output and price we were looking to pay. The fee could reach £45m and seemed a real gamble at the time, especially when he struggled with his fitness levels in the months after signing.

In 16 appearances last season, he scored just one, netting in our final day draw away at Chelsea. So far this season, he’s been one of the standout wingers in the Premier League and appears to be on the brink of the England squad after six goals and five assists in 13 league appearances.

Staveley backed him to become “one of the best players in the league” – a comment for Amazon that was laughed at by so many rival fans over the summer. But, just a few months an 11 goal involvements later, he really is one of the most dangerous and improved wingers in the Premier League.
