Newcastle’s goalkeeper plans go public after links with David De Gea

The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards has issued an update on Eddie Howe’s goalkeeper plans following a shoulder injury to Nick Pope.

Despite The Mail reporting that we’re ‘considering’ a move for free agent David De Gea, Edwards reveals that we’ll hand Martjn Dubravka a chance to prove his worth in Pope’s absence.

However, it’s believed the club could reassess the situation in January and bring in another goalkeeper should there be ‘problems defensively’ between now and the New Year.

Initial scan results suggest Pope could be sidelined for 4-5 months, so it looks set to be Dubravka, Loris Karius or a January recruit that steps in for the second half of the 2023/24 season, with the Slovakian having an audition period over the hectic festive schedule.

As for De Gea, he has pedigree, experience and is comfortable on the ball, but his wages would be monstrous. Are we really going to break our wage structure to bring him in when we have what should be two competent options in Dubravka and Karius?

#nufc have two senior goalkeepers in the squad as back up to Nick Pope. They plan to give Dubravka the opportunity to show he can step up this month. If there are problems defensively between now and end of the year they could reassess things but hope is he will show his quality…
