Barcelona’s financial struggles are well-documented, but a large part of the reason why they have been able under such severe duress for the past few years is also La Liga’s extremely strict financial rules.
The Spanish Federation decided to impose strict financial restrictions on the league and the clubs, such as the 1:3 rule — you must gain thrice your expenditure in revenue —, or a capped wage gap due to isolated cases of poor economic management that troubled clubs like Malaga.
However, due to this rule, Barcelona, and most other teams in the league, including Atletico Madrid, have missed out on some superstars coming through Europe, which has made other leagues, especially the English Premier League much more powerful.
La Liga, despite having the biggest clubs in the world, cannot afford to splash cash on some of these players. Barcelona, in fact, even struggle to register free signings.
According to Gerard Pique, the problem boils down to La Liga’s rules, which are causing problems for the biggest clubs, and decreasing their weight in Europe against the big dogs.
“La Liga have very strict FFP rules and other leagues have another system. Then in Europe, you are exposed to these clubs paying more through other ways,” he said, as quoted by MARCA.
“We are on the road that in five years, Barcelona and Real Madrid will not be able to compete in Europe.”
These statements are definitely interesting from Pique. While it may well be true for Barcelona, who have not sniffed the Champions League trophy since 2015, Real Madrid have been doing rather well, and won the competition as recently as in 2022.
Further, they have been able to afford, sign, and register any and all players from Europe and South America. The most recent of them was Jude Bellingham, who cost €103 million, while they also spent €100 million on Aurelien Tchouameni in 2022.
