Barcelona’s expected return date for Gavi after surgery following ACL injury

Barcelona were handed an extremely tough blow in between the 2023/24 season as Gavi picked up an ACL injury while playing for Spain against Georgia.

They had already qualified for the 2024 European Championship, and this game did not mean anything in terms of their position or qualification.

In fact, Spanish NT manager Luis de la Fuente benched most of the team, but started Gavi in midfield anyway, knowing full well the 19-year-old had already played 22 games this season, and at an unprecedented intensity.

It was not long after his injury that the diagnosis claimed that Gavi would miss the rest of the season through injury, and will likely also not play for Spain during the 2024 Euros held in Germany.

Barcelona were already dealing with injuries to Frenkie de Jong and Pedri through this season, and Gavi’s absence has definitely sent their season into a spiral.

The player underwent surgery yesterday, and was discharged today from the Barcelona Hospital, as per SPORT.

The Catalans are hoping that the Spaniard can return in time participate in the pre-season for Barcelona in July and August so he can be fit and ready to start the new season in late August.

Already into his third season with Barcelona (as a 19-year-old), Gavi has played well over 7,700 minutes for the club, which is the equivalent of 86 full matches. On top of that, he has also played over 1,700 minutes for Spain, accumulating to nearly 20 full games.

Playing over 10,000 minutes as a teenager screams of poor man-management from all parties involved, including Xavi, Luis Enrique, and Luis de la Fuente.

More so when they had the blueprint to it through Pedri, who also participated in an absurd amount of games after breaking through for Barcelona under Ronald Koeman, and went on to pick up several injuries soon after that, including one that laid him off for 2.5 months this season.
