Barcelona’s technical management is looking for a midfielder to strengthen the pivot position in the squad. The financial constraints mean that the objective is a long-term one, with the present and the future in mind.
A key position requires a strong investment for a top player and Barça are well aware of this. Manager Xavi likes Martin Zubimendi of Real Sociedad, who has a release clause of €60 million.
At the same time, Barcelona have not forgotten about Bayern Munich midfield mainstay Joshua Kimmich, who was on the club’s agenda last summer as well.
All options on the table for Kimmich
As per Gabriel Sans of Mundo Deportivo, even though Barcelona are keen on Kimmich, they are cautious with their pursuit of the Bayern Munich player, who is expensive and has a contract until 2025.
Even though Barça signed Oriol Romeu last summer, he was never their preferred target. After it became clear that Zubimendi would not be coming, the Catalans set their sights on Kimmich and the player himself was open to the switch, but nothing came of it.
Xavi has publicly praised Kimmich in the past and remains an admirer. He considers the German to be a top player who understands Barça’s positional play in a fantastic way.
As for Kimmich’s stance on the future, nothing is fixed at this point. The player does not plan to leave in the winter transfer window. His intention is to finish the season with Bayern and fight for all the championships, with the Champions League as his main objective.
Beyond that, Kimmich does not rule out even entering into negotiations to renew his contract at Bayern Munich. At the same time, various reports speak of talks with Xavi which would suggest that he would like to join Barcelona in the future.
So, it remains to be seen what course the situation takes as far as Kimmich and Barcelona are concerned.
