Speaking after FC Barcelona’s 2-1 win over FC Porto in the UEFA Champions League on Tuesday night, star defender Joao Cancelo sang praises of teammate Frenkie de Jong.
Cancelo was the star performer for Barcelona against Porto last night and walked away with the Man of the Match award after scoring and assisting a goal apiece.
Naturally, the 29-year-old received a lot of praise for his performance and deservedly so, with the feeling of signing him permanently growing stronger with each passing game.
Cancelo in awe of De Jong
But, during his interaction with UEFA TV (h/t Martin Minan) after the game, Cancelo highlighted the contributions of his Barcelona teammate Frenkie de Jong, hailing him as one of the best in the world in his position.
“I want to say something about Frenkie de Jong. He’s one of the best players I have ever seen in that position,” Cancelo said.
“When he plays he makes a tremendous difference and we’re happy to have him back,” he added.

De Jong is back and making a difference
As Cancelo pointed out, De Jong makes a big difference when on the pitch for Barcelona.
The midfielder missed two months of action due to an ankle injury this season and his absence was felt big time. Barça went through their worst run of performance during the period that the Netherlands international was away.
De Jong returned to action this past weekend against Rayo Vallecano, but had an off game. But last night, he was on point against Porto and highlighted the value he adds to this team, something that Cancelo acknowledged.
