24-year-old Dutch midfielder opens up about Barcelona rumours: “I did hear that”

While Barcelona were able to paper over the cracks in various positions this past summer owing to financial constraints, the club are aware that they must begin planning for the long term.

Out of all the positions, the defensive midfield role appears to be the least future-proof.

Oriol Romeu, who is in the twilight years of his career at 32, cannot be relied upon as a starting defensive midfielder for the next few years and has, in fact, already been losing prominence in the team due to fluctuations in form.

Consequently, the hunt for a pivot is underway. A multitude of names have been linked with the Catalan giants, with Mats Wieffer previously pitched as a potential candidate.

Wieffer unaware of interest

However, quashing the rumors, the 24-year-old Dutchman looks to be oblivious regarding the links tying him to Barcelona.

Recently asked to express his views on the legitimacy of the Blaugranes‘ interest the youngster downplayed the possibility, saying (FCUpdate.nl):

“I did hear that, but other than that, I don’t know much about it.”

Wieffer has morphed into a regular for the Dutch national team, and his excellent awareness on the pitch continues to earn him plaudits from the football world.

The 23-year-old has even shared a pitch with Barcelona talisman Frenkie de Jong, with the pair often deployed in a double pivot.

Wieffer was asked whether he had contacted Frenkie, to which he replied: “I didn’t talk to Frenkie about it, because he wasn’t there with the national team, and I didn’t send him a message either.”

While it remains to be seen whether his signing materializes and the club’s interest in him becomes more concrete, Barça will proceed to keep tabs on the pivot market.

News of Barcelona prioritizing Bayern Munich’s Joshua Kimmich have been doing the rounds too, as he may be the one to fill Barcelona’s defensive midfield position next season.
