Barcelona have been rocked by the serious injury to midfield prodigy Gavi, who ruptured his Anterior Cruciate Ligament (ACL) while playing for Spain against Georgia this past Sunday.
The major knee injury means that the 19-year-old will need surgery which will be followed by a lengthy rehabilitation of around eight months.
It is going to be a difficult road ahead for Gavi, especially considering how passionate and dedicated the La Masia graduate is.
With Spain playing in the Euros next year and the Olympic Games also taking place, there may be a temptation for him to push a bit hard in his recovery.
Patience the key, says Puyol
However, echoing the opinion of Gerard Pique, former Barcelona captain Carles Puyol has advised the teenage midfielder to be patient with his recovery and not rush anything.
Speaking at a public appearance earlier today, the iconic ex-defender said: “He should be patient. He should not be in a hurry to come back. He will come back very well, for sure.”
“He should have patience, he should not want to run,” Puyol added.
Drawing on personal experiences of having faced serious injuries during his playing career, the Barcelona and Spain icon said:
“Unfortunately, I have experience of injuries. The first thing is to send him lots of encouragement, that he should be patient now.
“This is coming from someone who had no patience at all and wanted to run a lot and I paid dearly for it. He must be calm, I’m sure he’s in very good hands.”
Driving home the point further, he added: “We all know Gavi, the winning character he has. He must be thinking about having an operation and starting rehabilitation. So the advice is to be patient, he is very young and he has a lot of games ahead of him.”
