Former Barcelona defender Gerard Pique has confirmed that right now, he is not thinking about becoming the president of the club as he is very much occupied with his day-to-day work.
“I’m so focused on my day-to-day life right now that I haven’t even thought about becoming Barça president,” he said in an interview with El Larguero.
In the same interview, the former defender also shared his thoughts on Xavi and the players coming from the youth system. He said that out of all the players, Gavi is someone who has impressed him a lot.
Regardless of his recent ACL tear, he said that the midfielder can have 15 or even 20 years of playing career.
“The level of La Masia players is crazy. They are top-level. We have [Alejandro] Balde, [Ronald] Araujo, now Marc Guiu, Gavi.”
“Of all the La Masia kids now, I would pick Gavi. And now he got injured. At 19 years old, what this kid does is insane. Regardless of the injury, he can have a 15 or 20-year-long career,” he added.
Pique’s thoughts on Xavi and his approach
Before announcing his retirement from professional football last year, Pique played his bit part under Xavi and while speaking about the manager, he said that Xavi is the ideal manager for Barcelona and he is very much respected in the dressing room.
“Xavi is the ideal manager for Barça. The players follow him. He knows the club well and he’s a legend. After that, the play style and results will dictate everything.”
The former defender added since Barcelona did decent business in the summer, expectations were bound to rise. These transfers, considering the magnitude of the players arriving, established a great deal of expectations among the fans.
“This is Xavi’s third season now, and the fact that both he and the president were so happy in the summer created massive expectations for the team. This motivates the fans but also creates expectations that are too high, and that’s happening now.”
