Barcelona midfield mainstay shuts down Turkey rumours: “I am very happy”

Last week, reports emerged claiming that Barcelona midfielder Ilkay Gundogan was looking into the possibility of making a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray in the near future.

Having joined Barça only last summer, the 33-year-old has already become a key member of the team under Xavi and is a regular fixture in the starting XI week in and week out.

So, the speculations about him wanting to move to Galatasaray only months after signing a two-year contract with Barcelona came as a bolt out of the blue.

Gundogan happy at Barcelona

However, speaking after Germany’s friendly encounter against Turkey this past weekend, Gundogan has clarified that he is very happy where he is and is not looking for an exit.

As quoted by SPORT, the Barcelona midfield mainstay said: “I am very happy in Spain, in my club,” effectively shutting down all talks about him wanting to leave the club in the near future.

Gundogan’s reactions come after his agent, Ilhan Gundogan, had already shot down those talks, claiming that there was nothing to those rumours.

“The reports in the press these days about Ilkay do not reflect the truth. I did not meet anyone from Galatasaray before the Bayern Munich game to talk about Ilkay. There was no development, meeting or anything that came to us in this regard,” Ilhan Gundogan said.

“I want to make this clear. Neither I nor Ilkay can understand how this news came about. Ilkay is very happy at Barcelona and is focused on what he wants to achieve there and on his goals.”

Since joining the club in the summer transfer window, Gundogan has played in each of Barcelona’s 17 matches in all competitions, even contributing a goal and five assists.

Gundogan has a contract with Barça until 2025 with an option for a further year which could be triggered based on meeting certain objectives in the next season.
