Barcelona could receive €3 million in compensation from FIFA following Gavi’s injury

The international break brought some very unfortunate news for FC Barcelona last night as star midfielder Gavi suffered a serious knee injury while playing for Spain against Georgia.

The 19-year-old was named in the starting XI again by manager Luis de la Fuente but lasted less than half an hour on the pitch as he left the pitch in tears after suffering the injury.

Following initial tests, it is suspected that Gavi has torn his ACL and will be out for the remainder of the season.

FIFA to compensate Barcelona

As per FIFA rules, clubs get compensated if a player is injured while on national team duty and is sidelined for more than 28 days.

As such, with Gavi expected to be out for at least six months, Mundo Deportivo is reporting that Barcelona would be due at least a sum of €3 million in compensation from FIFA following his injury.

From the 28th day of absence since the injury on Sunday, Barcelona will have to be compensated by FIFA under their club protection programme for releasing players to their national teams.

This brings us to 16 December as the date when Barça will start to receive this compensation.

The FIFA programme pays clubs a maximum compensation of up to €7,500,000 per player per injury. An amount that is calculated according to a daily compensation of up to €20,548 euros per day with a maximum of 365 days.

As such, if Gavi is out for six months Barcelona would stand to receive around €3,082,200. In the case of eight months, it would be €4,315,080.

The financial compensation will not make up for the loss of Gavi and what he brings to the team when on the field.

At this point, everyone will be hoping that the 19-year-old enjoys a swift and smooth recovery and there are no serious long-term repercussions because of last night’s events.
