In what could be a matter of concern for FC Barcelona, Germany national team manager Julian Nagelsmann has confirmed that goalkeeper Marc-Andre ter Stegen is dealing with a back problem and will be returning to his club.
The 31-year-old Barcelona second captain had become Nagelsmann’s first-choice in goal in recent months, partly due to Manuel Neuer’s injury-enforced absence.
Ter Stegen was part of the Germany squad called up for their friendlies against Turkey and Austria, along with his Barcelona teammate Ilkay Gundogan.
However, Nagelsmann has now confirmed that the Barça shot-stopper is dealing with acute back pain as a result of which he will miss both of Germany’s matches.
“Marc-Andre ter Stegen will miss both games due to acute back pain. He will probably be travelling back to Barcelona tomorrow morning. The thing is, he won’t be able to play or train,” Nagelsmann said during his press conference.
This is a matter of concern for Barcelona, who will now be eagerly awaiting Ter Stegen’s return so that they can conduct examinations and gauge the severity of his issue.
Having already seen a number of key players miss games due to fitness woes, Xavi Hernandez & co. will be hoping that their ace goalkeeper’s issue is nothing serious.
If it is, reserve goalkeeper Inaki Pena will get an opportunity for the first time this season.
