He may have turned 26 yesterday, but Bruno Guimaraes birthday ended in disaster for the Newcastle United midfielder in Colombia.
The midfielder started Brazil’s World Cup qualifier on Thursday night, playing alongside the likes of Real Madrid’s Vinicius Junior, Liverpool’s Alisson, Barcelona’s Raphinha and PSG’s Marquinhos.
They made a dream start as Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli scored in the opening stages, but two late goals in the space of four minutes from Liverpool’s Luis Diaz sealed a heroic win for Colombia, sending Brazil down to 5th in South America’s World Cup qualifying group.
The result means Brazil have now failed to win a World Cup qualifier for the third game in a row after a 2-0 defeat to Uruguay and 1-1 draw with Venezuela in October’s international break.
So, a bad night for Bruno – who didn’t stamp his authority on the game alongside Fluminense’s Andre – but a relief for Newcastle that he seemed to come through the match unscathed, with Joelinton and unused substitute.
Next up for our boys from Brazil, a huge clash with table-topping Argentina in the early hours of next Wednesday morning!
