Speaking at a public appearance earlier today, La Liga president Javier Tebas discussed Barcelona’s financial situation while also praising the club’s efforts to improve their economic conditions.
Tebas touched upon the latest economic measures approved by the La Liga Delegate Committee that reduce some restrictions on the club but still do not allow the Catalans to sign anyone in the winter market.
“It doesn’t suit them because they are in the situation they are in and you can’t make rules thinking about only one team,” the La Liga president said, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo.
At the same time, though, Tebas emphasised the efforts that Barcelona had made in order to get their wage bill under control, saying:
“At Barcelona, what you have to see is the effort they have already made, with a very important reduction of their first team squad because they had too many players. But they were not only overextended because of the league itself, but also because of the club’s management.”
Tebas was then quizzed about his relationship with Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez. In response, the La Liga supremo said:
“I get on well with the clubs and sometimes they will understand or not understand the decisions that may be taken by La Liga. It is not a question of being less or more sympathetic. It’s a question of decisions and nothing more.”
Tebas then went on to urge Laporta and Perez to follow Getafe president Angel Torres saying: “I would advise Florentino and Laporta to pay more attention to Ángel Torres because he knows a lot about football.”
