Barcelona’s January transfer window is anticipated to be a subdued affair, with limited player sales on the horizon. However, the club is poised to make significant acquisitions once the season is over.
A noticeable void in defensive midfield quality has become apparent since Sergio Busquets’ departure last summer, highlighting the urgent need for reinforcements. Securing a new player for the number six role is now a top priority for the club.
Barcelona interested in Bruno Guimaraes
To that end, one of the Barcelona are targeting in their bid to reinforce the defensive midfield position is Newcastle United’s Bruno Guimaraes.
This is according to Mundo Deportivo, which suggests that the Catalans have identified three top midfield targets for the summer of 2024. Atalanta’s Ederson and Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi are the other options.
As far as Guimaraes is concerned, this is not the first time Barcelona have been linked with a move for the Brazilian, who has enjoyed stellar success since moving to England.

In less than two years, Guimaraes has featured in 74 competitive matches for the Magpies, scoring 11 goals and recording eight assists.
How will Guimaraes fit into Barça?
Ever since moving to Europe, Bruno Guimaraes has made a name for himself thanks to his aggression and versatility in the middle of the park.
The Brazilian international is an excellent outlet in the second line of press and that is exactly what would make him an ideal midfield partner for Pedri and Frenkie de Jong.
Guimaraes’ aggressive style of play could complement the technical nature of the two Barcelona midfielders, thus adding more variety to the team’s midfield unit.
However, signing Guimaraes will be a tricky affair for the club. Newcastle would be unwilling to negotiate, having recently handed him a new contract.
