Barcelona consult former star to seek opinion on 24-year-old midfield target

Barcelona’s struggles in the defensive midfield this season are well-documented. Indeed, Oriol Romeu has done a decent job in covering the position since his arrival earlier this year.

Yet it is clear that the Catalans do not have a player capable of taking forward Sergio Busquets’ legacy in the middle of the park.

Reports earlier this week, thus, linked the club with Dutch prodigy Mats Wieffer.

Barcelona probe his profile

According to reports from SPORT, Barcelona have begun their customary deep dive into the Wieffer’s profile and tactical fit.

Deco has taken charge of the same and is leaving no stone unturned in evaluating the 24-year-old’s viability from a sporting perspective.

The Dutch connection in terms of playing style is undoubtedly a massive plus point. Now, Deco is said to have spoken to Giovanni van Bronckhorst, a former Barcelona player, for his opinion on Wieffer.

Van Brockhorst, a Dutch legend himself, spent many a year coaching Feyenoord, the club from which Wieffer belongs.

The former Barcelona star, who made over 150 appearances for the club between 2003 and 2007, has even publicly praised the player recently and assured that he was one of the keys in Feyenoord’s rise to prominence.

The final piece?

Barcelona’s hunt for a new pivot has been a continuing theme for years now. Yet, it has not come to fruition because of the sparing availability of quality defensive midfielders and the need for a specific profile to fit the team’s ideology.

Wieffer, on many fronts, is said to tick the required boxes.

For starters, his quality on the ball and spatial awareness are said to be impeccable. He is also well-versed in stopping offensive transitions and is a creative force in the middle of the park.
