As we approach the winter transfer window, Barcelona are set for a crucial year ahead.
The club are expected to undergo some key changes, even though they are not expected to trim the squad much in January.
One of the club’s priorities will be to keep hold of star players. The Blaugrana have already started the process by renewing the contracts of a few stars, including Alejandro Balde.
Barça to hold renewal talks with de Jong
According to Fabrizio Romano, the next objective for Barcelona appear to be the renewal of Frenkie de Jong.
The former Manchester United midfielder is currently one of the most important players in the team and the club want to keep hold of him for the foreseeable future.
De Jong’s current deal at Camp Nou expires in 2026, but Barcelona want to extend it further. As per Fabrizio, the Catalans are expected to hold talks with the midfielder over his renewal in 2024.

A new deal can help Barcelona secure de Jong’s long-term future at Camp Nou. At the same time, the club would be in a better position to negotiate, should they absolutely need to get rid of the player.
Both parties happy with extension
Fabrizio Romano adds that both parties are happy with the idea of extending de Jong’s contract beyond 2026.
However, Barça may face a few economic obstacles in their bid to extend the Dutchman’s contract. The club, after all, still have an inflated salary mass despite offloading several players in the summer.
De Jong, for his part, has agreed to lower his salary on multiple occasions and it will be interesting to see whether or not Barcelona ask him to lower his salary further, in a bid to extend the contract.
In the meantime, De Jong is spending time on the sidelines, though he is on the last stage of his recovery and should be available soon after the international break.
