Barcelona are on the lookout for a defensive midfielder as a priority come the summer transfer window after Sergio Busquets’ departure from the club in the summer of 2023 as a free agent.
The blaugranes, with no money in the bank, could only afford Oriol Romeu’s signing, who cost €3.5 million. The Spaniard started well, but has over the last few weeks severely fallen down the pecking order, with Xavi preferring to play Ilkay Gundogan in that role instead.
While the dream is to sign a superstar like Martin Zubimendi or Joshua Kimmich, who can fill Busquets’ shoes in the mid to long term, Barça cannot afford their singing as they will end up costing them no less than €60 million each.
As such, Barcelona were keeping tabs on 18-year-old Gabriel Moscardo of Corinthians. The Brazilian midfielder was also linked to Chelsea, but prefers a move to the Catalan capital, if reports are to be believed.
Barcelona sporting director, Deco, has confirmed that Barcelona are, indeed, following Mocardo. He admitted that his name has been on their agenda for months.
However, AS reports that the club is worried about his age. At 18, he is too young to immediately become a starter in such an important position.
Moreover, Barcelona are looking for a player in or near his prime as their squad is already filled to the brim with youngsters. The team needs experience and instant impact, which Moscardo will likely not provide.
Not to forget, Corinthians are expected to ask for a sum in the €20 million range, which is impossible for Barcelona to shell out right now, especially for an 18-year-old.
