Barcelona president Joan Laporta and Real Madrid president Florentino Perez have resigned from their positions on the board of directors of the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF), reports AS.
In letters sent at the end of October to the president of the RFEF, Pedro Rocha, the presidents of Real Madrid and Barcelona have communicated their decision to step down with immediate effect from their posts on the RFEF’s management body.
Both Laporta and Perez have a close relationship with Pedro Rocha, and as such have justified their decision to resign with the intention not to interfere in the electoral process that will take place in the coming months at the RFEF.
According to the report, Laporta and Perez are the only members of the board of directors who, for now, have resigned.
With this decision, the presidents of Barcelona and Real Madrid have distanced themselves from any interference in the electoral campaign for the presidency of the RFEF, which will begin at the beginning of next year.
Luis Rubiales was removed as the president of RFEF owing to his controversial antics following Spain Women’s national team’s World Cup triumph earlier this year.
Pedro Rocha stepped in as interim president following Rubiales’ suspension by FIFA and now an election is set to be held in early 2024 for the post.
