The U.S. men’s national team will be without star attackers Christian Pulisic and Timothy Weah this month, opening the door for in-form Alex Zendejas to try and make the most of his opportunity.
Zendejas recently captured the Liga MX Apertura title with Club America, helping lead the Mexican club to a 12-4-1 record over 17 league matches. The 25-year-old scored five goals and added three assists in 15 appearances during the Apertura schedule, being a key offensive weapon for the second-consecutive season.
Pulisic and Weah are easily first-choice players for the USMNT when healthy, but it’s Zendejas time to prove his worth in a pair of CONCACAF Nations League quarterfinal ties against Trinidad & Tobago.
“Obviously, it sucks not having those two guys in because they’re a huge part of the team,” Zendejas said in a press conference. “But I’m going to try to take this opportunity and make the most of it. I’m really looking forward to it.”
Zendejas’ last competitive minutes with the USMNT came in last summer’s Gold Cup quarterfinal victory over Canada, a tournament where he only registered one assist in four combined appearances.
After not featuring in the eventual semifinal defeat to Panama last July, Zendejas was not called into the September USMNT camp before being an unused substitute in both of October’s matches against Germany and Ghana. The missed opportunities from last summer’s Gold Cup might still linger in the back of Zendejas’ mind, but overall he is seeking a fresh start with a Nations League three-peat still up for grabs.
“I can agree that my Gold Cup wasn’t the best, but you’ve just got to look at the next opportunity you have,” Zendejas said.
“I’ve been working hard back at home with my club team,” he added. “I’ve been working on my finishing, just working on what the coach is asking me to do. I’ll try to take that and bring it into this camp with my teammates and try to…
