November 6 – The Romanian state is poised to start work on the construction of a new modern stadium. This chairman of the Timișoara County Council, Alin Nika, said the brand new facility will have 32,000 seats, and will cost an estimated €137 million to build.
The bulk of the financing will be provided by Romania’s National Investment Company, and the remaining €7 million will be provided by the local district council of Timișoara.
The new stadium is to be built on the site of the existing arena in Timisoara.
The current stadium in the city was built in 1963 and has 33,000 seats. It was closed in 2022 and since then no football has been played at the Timișoara stadium. The Banat region does not have any team in the first two leagues in Romania.
If the project is implemented, the stadium in Timisoara will be the second largest in Romania, after the ‘Arena Nacional’ in Bucharest which has a capacity of 55,000 spectators. Nika presented architects drawings of the future arena and announced that a final decision from the Romanian government is awaited to start construction activities.
“This is how Timisoara stadium could look like! We are preparing for the demolition of the current arena and to prepare the field. We are waiting from Bucharest the promised Government decisions so we can get to work”, shared Nika on Facebook.
