Barcelona lodge enquiry for 26-year-old defensive midfielder, Newcastle, Tottenham also keen

Barcelona will be on the lookout for a defensive midfielder either in the January transfer window or at the end of the current season.

Even though the Blaugrana roped in Oriol Romeu last summer, there is no natural backup in the pivot midfield position at Xavi Hernandez’s disposal.

Furthermore, the Spanish summer arrival’s recent dip in form is also a cause for concern for the Catalans, and as such there is a need for another player in the position.

But the finances dictate that Barça be on the lookout for a cost-effective option rather than going big on a player.

Wilfred Ndidi a target for Barcelona

As such, Barcelona have identified Leicester City defensive midfielder Wilfred Ndidi as a potential target and are keeping tabs on his situation.

The 26-year-old Nigerian international is in the final year of his contract with the Foxes and will become a free agent at the end of the ongoing season.

Given his experience and proven pedigree in the Premier League, coupled with the form he is showcasing with Leicester in the current season in the Championship, Barça see Ndidi as an option for the pivot position.

In fact, TEAMTALK is reporting that Barcelona have already made an enquiry for Ndidi, as have their La Liga rivals Atletico Madrid.

The Catalans see Ndidi as an option for free transfer during the summer of 2024 and have reportedly made enquiries about him.

Intense competition expected

However, Barcelona are set to face some intense competition to acquire Ndidi’s services for free next summer.

Indeed, Premier League clubs like Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur are also very much interested in the Nigerian international and are already weighing up a January raid for him.

Beyond that, Aston Villa and Brentford are also in the picture and are also considering making a move for Ndidi in the winter.
