Ilkay Gundogan raised many eyebrows after Barcelona’s 2-1 defeat to Real Madrid, as he openly called out his teammates for not doing enough.
The German international was brutally honest about how he witnessed a lack of remorse and reaction from his teammates after the defeat.
“I would’ve liked to see more frustration and anger. There should be stronger feelings. I did not come here to lose these types of matches,” he notably said.
Gundogan further added that if Barcelona continue to approach matches in this manner, then Real Madrid and even Girona will easily run away with the title.
Criticism taken well at Barcelona
Ilkay Gundogan’s open criticism of his Barcelona teammates came as a shock to many, but it appears the club have taken it rather well.
As pointed out by Helena Condis, the players were surprised by his comments because they are not accustomed to someone calling out and criticising them in such a manner in public.
But they have taken Gundogan’s comments on a positive note, knowing Barcelona were indeed lacking that sort of mentality for a while now.

Experience says it all
Fernando Polo, meanwhile, noted that Gundogan’s comments were well received from the technical staff as well.
The German international, after all, is considered a winner and a player with enough stature to be able to raise his voice against the team.
During his time at Manchester City, Gundogan had won several Premier League titles while leading his team to a treble last season.
He is, therefore, able to open an internal debate among the team after performances like these. As such, both the technical staff and sports department validate his criticism.
