After netting his fourth of the season in Sunday’s 8-0 win at Sheffield United, Callum Wilson told Sky Sports that he should’ve had three of four. It summed up his obsession with scoring goals that he still wanted more after the biggest away win in the club’s history!
Since the game, I’ve picked out four outstanding stats that show just how good our number nine has been, cementing his place as our best striker since the great Alan Shearer, in my view:
Callum Wilson has the second best goals-per-minute record (134 mins per goal) for Newcastle. In Premier League history, only Andy Cole (121 mins per goal) can better this.
Since the start of last season, only Erling Haaland (43) and Harry Kane (30) have scored more Premier League goals than Callum Wilson (22)
Callum Wilson has scored a league goal every 82 minutes on average this year. That’s a better rate than Haaland, Mbappe, Osimhen, Kane, Salah, Benzema and Lewandowski.
Callum Wilson is now the club’s fifth top scorer in Premier League history on 42 goals. Five more goals and he’ll move above Andy Cole (43), Shola Ameobi (43) and Peter Beardsley (46).
Not only does he score goals, he runs the channels and is a real handful for Premier League centre-backs, with his power, movement and street smarts making him a nightmare to play against.
He may have lost a yard of pace, but he’s developed areas of his game, has an elite mentality and has always scored goals; whether it was relegation battles under Steve Bruce or pushing for Europe under Eddie Howe.
With a new deal signed earlier this month, the 31-year-old is aging like a fine wine and thriving from the competition Alexander Isak has added to our attack. Long may it continue!
