Eddie Howe is concerned about Newcastle’s lack of numbers down the left, with Anthony Gordon just one booking away from a one-game ban.
Joelinton (knee) and Joe Willock (Achilles) are already sidelined and likely to be out until the international break, but Harvey Barnes is the latest left-sided player to be sidelined after suffering a toe injury in yesterday’s 8-0 win over Sheffield United.
Howe admitted it “doesn’t look good” for for the Leicester City winger, putting the emphasis on Gordon to stay fit and available over the coming weeks. However, with four yellow cards in our opening six games, he’s one booking away from suspension.
Gordon won’t be banned for Burnley if he’s booked in Wednesday’s cup clash with Man City, but he would miss our trip to West Ham in two weeks time if he’s cautioned on Saturday.
Here’s what the boss had to say about Gordon’s situation following recent injuries:
“Of course it’s a concern. Injuries in one position will hurt us this year. We’ve been missing two midfielders and that’s been a concern for us. Losing Harvey won’t be something we’ll take lightly.
“The suspensions are something we’re going to have to live with to a degree with the new rules that are coming in.
“A couple of Anthony’s bookings have been very harsh. That’s the territory we’re in but that’s why we have the squad that we have to cover anyone’s absence.”
Howe on Harvey Barnes:
“It doesn’t look too good. I think he has a toe problem. He pushed off and felt something in his toe. Early signs are there’s probably an injury there, but we don’t know what it is at the moment.”
