Garth Crooks has selected his BBC Team of the Week, yet has only named two Mags in his Premier League 11 – Kieran Trippier and Anthony Gordon
After we put eight past Sheffield United, matching our biggest ever top flight win and becoming the first side in Premier League history to have eight different scorers in a single game, I’d expect more!
Had Man City, Arsenal or Liverpool delivered such a demolition job, I think it would’ve been a different story and suspect there’ll be more than two named in Alan Shearer’s Team of the Week…
Nevertheless, Crooks hailed Trippier’s immense leadership but somehow missed out the fact he became only the fourth player in Newcastle history to deliver a hat-trick of assists in the Premier League.
Then to Gordon, the BBC pundit feels the winger is a “different player” to the one he saw at Everton and “ran the show” at Bramall Lane, scoring one beauty after setting up Sean Longstaff’s opener.
Bruno was brilliant in the middle, pulling the strings, scoring his first of the season and setting up Almiron for our sixth. I’m struggling to see how he didn’t make the XI, but here’s what Crooks did have to say on Trippier and Gordon, followed by his TOTW in full:
Kieran Trippier (Newcastle):
“This was an impressive victory by Newcastle. They were involved in a goalless draw and a titanic tussle in the Champions League against AC Milan in midweek and dealt with the fixture extremely well.
“To then go to Bramall Lane and be 3-0 up after just 36 minutes and 6-0 after 70 suggests just how far the Magpies have come since their ascent to the top flight and how far Sheffield United need to improve if they have any chance of staying in the Premier League.
“Sheffield United never laid a glove on Newcastle. It was like a battle-hardened team playing a side just coming to terms with the division. As for Newcastle’s captain Tripper, his leadership knows no bounds.”
