The competition in Barcelona’s midfield is unforgiving. With some of the world’s best talents like Gavi, Pedri and Frenkie de Jong competing with Oriol Romeu and Ilkay Gundogan for three spots on the field, there is a healthy rivalry.
One player who has gone under the radar, however, is Fermin Lopez. The La Masia starlet has not enjoyed the prominence he would have liked to after a blistering pre-season campaign, with the situation being far from ideal.
The flame continues to burn bright
According to reports from SPORT, Lopez is unperturbed by the relative lack of minutes. The midfielder has his head down and is working hard to pounce on the opportunity when it arrives.
So far, the youngster has only featured 11 minutes for Barcelona in La Liga. Xavi called on his for half an hour in the team’s 5-0 win over Royal Antwerp, but that is where the list of his participation comes to an end.
Lopez went down to help Rafa Marquez’s side in their clash against Gimnastic in the recent international break. However, he could not catch a break, as he was given his marching orders during the game and even missed the clash against Real Betis as a result.
His moment may not be far away
Despite not featuring much so far, it is clear that Xavi Hernandez trusts Lopez and sees him with high regard.
The same was visible in the manager’s recent press conference, where he specifically highlighted the La Masia starlet’s profile.
“He’s a discovery and he can help us a lot, to be taken into account, he can be important,” he said about the youngster.
With Pedri and Frenkie de Jong both injured for the team’s upcoming clashes, the up-and-coming star’s time may just have arrived. The onus will be on him to make the most of his opportunities.
