AFC coaches under scrutiny as Tech Committee pushes for higher quality and quantity

September 20 – The AFC Technical Committee has raised the coaching criteria requirements for coaches in its club competitions, saying that the regions needs to further “strengthen the foundations for the Continent’s coaches to further elevate the standards of the Asian game”.

The committee, meeting virtually, under the chairperson Kohzo Tashima, agreed that the current Minimum Coaching Requirements (MCR) for the current AFC Champions League will apply to both the AFC Champions League Elite and the AFC Champions League 2; whilst the MCR for the AFC Cup will apply to the AFC Challenge League.

Referencing the “strategic reforms to the AFC’s club competitions”, the committee emphasised the need to boost the quality and quantity of Asian coaches.

The committee also paid tribute AFC Coaching Convention in raising the capabilities of the continent’s tutors and educators. Since its launch in 2017, as many as 44 Member Associations (MAs) are currently benefitting from the programme.

A key part of the work coaching work plan is the approved 2024 AFC Specialised Coaching Courses, in particular the AFC Fitness Coaching Certificate courses for MAs that have yet to be integrated into the AFC Coaching Convention.

The committee also approved the key principles and parameters of the Technical Agreement between the AFC and its sister Confederation UEFA, which is working towards the mutual recognition of coaching qualifications and greater collaboration on coach education.

Detail was also examined covering two corresponding milestone technical programmes – the AFC Elite Youth Scheme and the AFC Grassroots Charter memberships – as well as the AFC Special Grassroots and Elite Youth Football Awards 2023.
