As Barcelona prepare to kick off their UEFA Champions League 2023/24 campaign against Royal Antwerp later tonight at Montjuic, they will be eager to erase the demons of the past few seasons in Europe.
Having been eliminated from the group stages in the past two editions of the competition, the Blaugrana will be very eager to, at the very least, make it past the first hurdle this time around.
The early eliminations from the group stage in the last couple of seasons have not only hurt the club’s pride and prestige but also delivered a blow to their finances, given the large prize money available for grabs in the tournament.
Barcelona could pocket up to €76 million
Now, according to Mundo Deportivo, the financial incentive for Barcelona could be massive in the new Champions League campaign as they could pocket a significant fee from just the group stages of the competition.
Compared to the past couple of seasons, Barça have been drawn in a much more straightforward group that also has FC Porto, Royal Antwerp, and Shakhtar Donetsk.
And should the La Liga champions win all their group games and qualify for the next round, they could pocket as much as €76.05 million.
As it is Barcelona have already pocketed close to €50 million from their participation in the Champions League this season.
Indeed, the Catalans have received €15.64 million for being in the group stage of the tournament, along with €34.11 million for being third in the ten-year historical rankings, making it €49.65 million.
In addition to that, UEFA awards €2.8 million for each victory (€0.93 million for draws) and as such, if the Blaugrana were to win all their group games, it would amount to €16.8 million in total.
That, along with the aforementioned €49.65 million participation prize money and €9.6 million awarded for progression to the Round of 16 would total up to €76.05 million that Barcelona would earn from the group stages alone, provided they win all games.
