In just over 24 hours time, Newcastle United will begin their UEFA Champions League campaign after 20 years away from Europe’s elite competition.
It all starts at the San Siro against AC Milan. An iconic venue and tough away trip, yet a side who suffered a devastating defeat on Saturday night.
Just as we beat Brentford 1-0 at St James’ Park, Milan lost 5-1 to Inter Milan at the San Siro. Hardly ideal preparation for Tuesday’s game and hopefully a loss that damages their confidence going into our game.
Next up, PSG; our opponents in our first home game of Group F on October 4th. The Ligue 1 giants took on Nice in Paris on Friday night and suffered a shock defeat. Kylian Mbappe scored twice for the hosts, but they managed just three shots on target all night and were beaten in their own back yard.
Last but not least, Borussia Dortmund, who won 4-2 against Freiburg’s 10 men thanks to goals in the 88th and 92nd minute from Mats Hummels and Marco Reus.
Before that, the Bundesliga giants drew 2-2 with Heidenheim and 1-1 with Vfl Bochum, so they too aren’t in imperious form heading into the Champions League group stages.
