Last week, it was revealed that Bruno Guimaraes is on the verge of signing a contract extension at Newcastle United after months of talks – and it seems Amanda Staveley played a key role in recent talks.
As revealed by The Telegraph’s Luke Edwards, it’s believed our co-owner ‘personally intervened’ to break the deadlock.
It’s thought Staveley’s ‘human touch’ during discussions was a major factor, as she made it clear just how much the Brazilian is valued by the club.
The Telegraph add that a ‘big pay rise’ has also helped, with The Athletic’s George Caulkin revealing last week that our opening offer fell short of Bruno’s expectations when it came to his salary.
However, thanks to Staveley’s intervention an a positive round of talks, the former Lyon star is now ‘close’ to signing a new improved deal at St James’ Park, allowing him to put any off-field distractions aside ahead of our Champions League trip to AC Milan.
After struggling badly in our 3-1 defeat to Brighton a few weeks ago, it was brilliant to see Bruno back at it on Saturday, as we saw glimpses of his best in that second half.
It was feared he was ‘distracted’ by the lack of progress during contract talks, along with some of the criticism he interacted with on social media. Hopefully an official announcement comes soon and we see more of the Bruno we know and love at the San Siro.
