September 17 – Spain’s La Liga is to sponsor the club with the longest name in world football, Welsh village team Clwb Pêl Droed Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, into its centenary year celebrations.
In a one-year deal, LaLiga’s new shortened logo will be displayed on the club’s shirt this season, starting with the team’s match against Holyhead Town FC last Saturday.
Based on the island of Anglesey, the club – CPD Llanfairpwll FC for short – play in Division One of the North Wales Coast West League, in the fifth tier of Welsh football. In 2024, the club will mark its 125th anniversary.
“We’ve got a great group here who are really committed to bringing success to the club,” said CPD Llanfairpwll FC manager Gwyndaf Hughes. “I know the lads can’t wait to wear the new kit with pride.”
It’s not the first time La Liga have sought to establish a grassroots footprint in the United Kingdom, having sponsored the Bloomsbury Football League in north London, and running summer camps in England featuring Spanish coaches.
