Gearing up for a new era under the direction of Deco, Barcelona have observed a major overhaul in the sporting department of the club following the departure of Mateu Alemany.
The forming sporting director departed the club after enjoying a successful spell with the Blaugrana, and SPORT have come out to highlight the reasons behind his exit.
Conflicting approaches
Indeed, Alemany’s “professional mismatch” with Deco was one of the factors that led him to depart. The board of directors was aware that the relationship between Deco and Mateu was not in the best place and that the manner in which they collaborated at the office was not harmonious.
Although the move fell flat, Mateu Alemany was more receptive to Aston Villa’s offer at the start of the summer transfer window because of Deco’s unconventional approach to negotiations.
Alemany aspired to oversee his side with control over the sports structure, which is what the English club offered.
The 60-year-old ended up turning down the proposal due to a shortage in the financial budget as well as an emotional factor that bound him to the Catalan giants.
Upon his return, however, relations soured, with an incident with Alemany Juan Foyth’s agents serving as a crucial breaking point.
Mateu eventually decided to permanently leave the Barça team because he did not want to accept a new, more institutional role connected to contacts with La Liga.
Barcelona’s reformed structure
With Deco at the helm, a great deal of change has already been made. The former midfielder will be the sports director of the football area and will directly report to sports vice-president Yuste and president Laporta.
The Portuguese has elected a variety of personnel to aid the club’s ambitions in different sectors, with the common goal of reinstating its place as a European heavyweight.
