The New England Revolution made a major change to their coaching staff on Tuesday, continuing a messy situation surrounding the Eastern Conference club.
ClintPeay has been named interim head coach of the Revs, making the jump up from Revolution II in MLS NEXT Pro. MarceloSantos, who was part of Peay’s staff with Revs II will also make the move up to the first team as an assistant.
The Revs also parted ways with assistant coaches Dave van den Bergh and Shalrie Joseph.
The 49-year-old Peay brings more than 20 years of coaching experience to his new position. He has compiled a 34-36-16 record over four seasons as Revolution II head coach since his appointment to the role in November 2019.
Peay’s leadership has helped Revolution II secure a berth in the MLS NEXT Pro Playoffs, with the league’s third-best record at 14-5-8. The Columbia, Maryland native has also coached in the NCAA, as well as with several U.S. youth national teams.
Former Revs head coach Bruce Arena resigned from his role on Saturday after originally being placed on administrative leave back on Aug. 1. Arena was under an MLS-led investigation into allegations of “inappropriate and insensitive” remarks.
Richie Williams was named interim head coach on Saturday following Arena’s resignation and admitted Tuesday that the Revs did not take part in team practice. He reportedly is remaining with the club’s coaching staff as an assistant coach.
“We didn’t have training today as we had a bunch of meetings between players, coaches and management,” said Williams. “The length of the meetings and what was discussed we decided as a group, collectively, that we wouldn’t have training today and we’d be out tomorrow.”
The Revs are second in the Eastern Conference with 48 points earned through 27 matches. New England is scheduled to visit the Colorado Rapids on Saturday in its latest MLS match.
