Barcelona have closed the signing of Spanish ace, could announce it on Monday

After a long-drawn pursuit of a pivot midfielder, Barcelona can now close the book on it as Nil Sola, via Jijantes (h/t Carpetas FCB), is reporting that the signing of Oriol Romeu from Girona has been closed. In fact, an official announcement about the same could be made as early as Monday.

Barça have been on the lookout for a defensive midfielder all through the summer after Sergio Busquets confirmed his departure. Targets like Marcelo Brozovic, Joshua Kimmich, and Martin Zubimendi were considered and discarded for one or the other reason.

Finally, the Blaugrana settled on Romeu as their preferred option as the 31-year-old fit into the club’s current economic reality and knows the Barça philosophy well, having come through the ranks at La Masia and made a couple of senior appearances for the team as well.

Negotiations with Granada have been going on for a while now and a breakthrough was finally achieved last night, with reports claiming that Barcelona would be signing Romeu for €5 million plus variables while also sending Pablo Torre on loan to Granada.

Now, building on that, Nil Sola is reporting that the deal is completely sealed and could be made official this coming Monday.

It comes as a huge boost for manager Xavi Hernandez, who had been intent on signing the pivot midfielder before the team flew off to the United States of America for their pre-season tour.

Given Romeu’s proven pedigree and experience, coupled with his familiarity with the Barça ideologies, should help him adapt fairly quickly to the team.

Even then, the 31-year-old would need time to get on the same wavelength as his new teammates and the pre-season friendlies against Juventus, Arsenal, Real Madrid, and AC Milan should help him achieve just that.

While not the most fashionable signing, Romeu will add some steel to the Barcelona midfield and could serve as a good short-term fix until Barcelona can secure a younger pivot in a year or two.
