Bruno Guimaraes has been discussing his favourite position, two consecutive draws at St James’ Park, his recent hamstring injury and his Brazilian dream ahead of the World Cup.
Asked about his role in the side, the midfielder admits that he prefers Eddie Howe to play him in a slightly more advanced ‘No.8’ position, even if he is capable of operating slightly deeper – as he did last weekend – as a ‘No.6.’
This is no surprise, as we saw the 24-year-old bag five goals and an assist in this slightly more advanced role at the back end of last season, however he’s recently played in front of a back four in Jonjo Shelvey’s absence.
Here’s what he told The Mail when asked what he believes to be his best position:
“I can play both positions.
“I prefer to play the No.8. The No.6 I can help the team to move forward with the ball.
“I think the gaffer has a choice, I can play every position in midfield. I have played more in a No.8. But it is not a problem for me.”
The former Lyon star then discussed the challenge facing Eddie Howe and his Newcastle United team at St James’ Park, believing we need to “create alternatives” to break teams down after Crystal Palace and Bournemouth both came away with a point after we struggled to create against their low block:
“All the teams will do this now (sit deep and frustrate us) and we need to create alternatives.
“We are disappointed because we are creating opportunities, we just didn’t score. We lost two more points at home on Saturday.
“This cannot happen.”
Bruno also had this to say on his recent hamstring injury, although it’s worth noting that these comments come before the thigh problem he’s picked up while away with the Brazil squad:
‘” was injured in the Man City game. I then tried to play in the Tranmere game (three days later). When I needed to run, I felt it a lot. For me, I thought I was just tired and I didn’t know I was even injured.
