September 11 – UEFA has pushed the Champions League tie between Rangers and SSC Napoli back from Tuesday September 13 to Wednesday September 14 to allow a day between the lying in state in Edinburgh and the match kick off.
UEFA said the extra day was needed “due to the severe limitations on police resources and organisational issues related to the ongoing events surrounding the national mourning for Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II.”
The Queen’s coffin has arrived at the Palace of Holyroodhouse in Edinburgh today (Sunday) after being greeted by thousands of people at the city’s Royal Mile after a journey from Balmoral Castle.
The coffin will be flown to London on Tuesday, and the Queen will lie in state at Westminster Hall from Wednesday.
UEFA said that the Youth League game between both teams had also been moved back a day.
The fixture on Wednesday will not have away Napoli fans present.
UEFA said that “as a matter of sporting fairness, Rangers’ fans will not be authorised for the return legs in Naples.”
The European governing body urged fans not to travel “and to respect this extraordinary situation”.
