It seems like Barcelona and Atletico Madrid could be set to go to war over the situation surrounding Antoine Griezmann.
The 31-year-old French ace joined Atletico on loan from Barça in 2021 with an obligation to make the transfer permanent for €40 million. There is now a dispute between the two clubs regarding the conditions for the permanent purchase clause to kick in.
As per Barcelona, Griezmann featuring for 45 minutes or more in greater than 50% of the matches he was available for in his first year on loan was enough to trigger the clause. Meaning that the Catalans already consider the Frenchman to be an Atletico player and want the €40 million owed.
Atletico, however, are arguing that the mandatory purchase clause will be activated only if Griezmann plays at least 45 minutes in 50% of matches across his two seasons on loan – which is why they have been using him for 30 minutes or less so far this term.
It has sparked speculations that Barcelona are planning to hit Atletico Madrid with a lawsuit over their non-payment of the fees. However, Los Rojiblancos are unperturbed about the situation as they believe that they are in the right over the contract clause.
Following their most recent La Liga game against Celta Vigo on Saturday, during which Griezmann once again came on after the hour mark, Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo was asked for a response about Barça threatening them with a potential lawsuit.
In response, he said (h/t SPORT): “No I don’t know, nothing has come to us. We don’t know if we’ve been sued or not.”
Cerezo appeared reluctant to go into the specifics of the clause and whose interpretation of it is right but cryptically added: “Anything is possible in this life.”
If a resolution is not reached over the matter, there is a chance that Griezmann could return to Barcelona at the end of the season. Given his contract with the Catalans runs until 2024, the Blaugrana would then have to bear his massive wages for another year…
